BEFORE YOU INVEST

Your buying questions come first.

Cost, compatibility and privacy can change the decision. Here is what to establish before choosing SPD.

COST

“Is it worth the extra cost?”

SPD is a premium option worth evaluating where fixed tint or shades compromise a valuable view or leave a persistent daylight problem. Compare the complete installed scope before choosing.

What affects your quote
EXISTING WINDOWS

“Can it work with the glass I have?”

Self-adhesive SPD film is available for suitable existing glazing. A project review checks the glass, edges, access and wiring. New laminated glazing may suit other projects better.

Review my existing windows
PRIVACY & BLACKOUT

“Will it turn completely opaque?”

No. SPD is designed for adjustable shading and can remain see-through. If night-time privacy or bedroom blackout is essential, include a separate solution in the design.

Looking for switchable privacy?
ENERGY SAVINGS

“Will it lower my energy bills?”

Solar-control glazing may reduce cooling demand in the right project. The potential saving depends on the complete glazing, climate, orientation and controls. Tint darkness alone does not establish energy performance.

Include solar control in my review
COLOR & CLARITY

“Will my windows still look blue?”

They may. SPD can retain a blue tone even in its lighter state. Review a physical sample against your view and interior finishes before approving the appearance.

Understand the tint and clear state
WIRING & EVERYDAY USE

“Will I need cables and a controller?”

Yes. The film needs compatible power and control equipment. Cable routes, access and the controls you want belong in the proposal, so you can assess the complete installation.

CHANGING LIGHT, SAME VIEW

“Can I shade the room without closing it off?”

SPD adjusts the light passing through the glass while retaining a view. Review the tint range and appearance against the daylight problem in your space.

WHAT YOU ARE INVESTING IN

Light control that belongs in the design.

Solar control with energy performance in mind

Adjust shading as sunlight changes. In suitable glazing, solar control can help limit cooling demand; energy savings and environmental benefits depend on the whole project.

Less dependence on mechanical shades

Consider an alternative to routinely covering important views or maintaining hard-to-reach shading.

More comfortable sun-exposed spaces

Manage glare and unwanted daylight where people sit, work or relax. Thermal performance depends on the complete glazing.

Architecture with the view intact

Explore shading within the glazing when curtains, tracks or blinds conflict with the intended space.

WHEN THE VIEW IS PART OF THE SPACE

“Why invest in large windows if I keep covering them?”

Adjustable tint can reduce dependence on blinds for daylight shading. Keep separate screening where privacy or blackout is essential.

TWO SPD FILM OPTIONS

“Do I need to replace my windows?”

Start with the glass you have, or the glazing you plan to build. The review defines which format is appropriate.

EXISTING GLAZING

Self-adhesive SPD film

NEW GLAZING DESIGN

Integrate SPD film between glass layers. The project specification establishes the fabricated assembly, safety requirements, dimensions and controls.

Review my new glazing project

Before approving the appearance: review a physical sample of the selected film and, where needed, the complete glazing. These illustrations explain applications; they do not show completed SmartGlass USA installations.

APPEARANCE & EVERYDAY USE

“Will I like the tint—and how will I control it?”

Choose the appearance and the way you want to use the system before the electrical design is finalized.

TINT & CLARITY

Check the blue tone in your own light.

SPD can change from a darker blue tone to a lighter, see-through state, with intermediate shading levels. The lighter state may still have tint.

Review the proposed sample in daylight and at night, from inside and outside. Your specification should identify its color, light transmission and response in both directions.

Include appearance and sample requirements
POWER & CONTROL

Plan a complete, compatible system.

The active film needs matched electrical equipment. The project review specifies the power supply, SPD controller, wiring, connection points and access for servicing.

Tell us whether you prefer a wall control, remote or smart-home/building integration. The offered controller and its supported functions must be confirmed; these options are not automatically included.

PRICE & PROJECT SCOPE

What will SPD smart glass cost?

SPD film is the active material, not a complete installed window.

Size, glazing, electrical work and site access all affect the proposal. You can start with approximate dimensions; final pricing needs a confirmed product and installation scope.

SPECIFICATION & PURCHASE QUESTIONS

The details that need to be right.

How much does SPD smart glass cost per square foot?

There is no standard installed price on this page. Glass construction, size, controls, access and installation scope affect the quote. Share your project details for a scoped review.

Can SPD film be installed on my existing windows?

Self-adhesive SPD film is an option for suitable existing windows. Compatibility depends on the selected film, glass construction, edges, exposure and installation conditions. SPD film for lamination is also available for a new glazing design.

Is SPD the same as PDLC privacy glass?

SPD adjusts transmitted light for shading. PDLC is generally selected to switch between a clearer state and a light-diffusing privacy state. Choose according to the problem you need to solve.

Will the dark setting provide full privacy or blackout?

Do not rely on it for either. SPD can remain see-through when tinted. Bedrooms, bathrooms and sensitive spaces may need a separate privacy or blackout solution.

Will it reduce air-conditioning costs or make my building more sustainable?

Potential energy benefits need assessment using the actual glazing, orientation, climate and building systems. Tint alone does not prove a saving. Broader environmental claims need product and life-cycle evidence.

Can I remove all my blinds or curtains?

It depends on their purpose. Adjustable shading may reduce their role, but privacy, blackout and other room requirements still need to be met.

What color and clarity should I expect?

Published SPD examples have a blue-toned dark state. The lighter state may still have tint; transparent does not mean colorless. Review the proposed physical sample from different angles, against your interior finishes and in day/night lighting. Illustrations are not color swatches or the maximum and minimum tint specification.

Does SPD need wiring, and what happens if power fails?

SPD needs a matched power supply and controller. Published conventional SPD examples become darker when power is removed and clearer when powered; verify the selected model and any backup needs. The review defines electrical capacity, routing, connection details and safe access. A PDLC transformer or standard light dimmer is not automatically compatible.

Can it connect to my smart home or building controls?

Specify the wall control, remote, smart-home or building system you want to use. We must establish a compatible controller, interface and control zones before offering that integration. App, voice, wireless operation and specific protocols are not included unless confirmed in your proposal.

Can it be used in a skylight, large window or exterior façade?

Each application needs a suitable glass assembly. Dimensions, loads, overhead safety, weather exposure and local requirements need review before specification. Illustrations do not confirm availability in a particular size or shape.

What warranty, certifications and lead time will I receive?

Confirm these in the written proposal for the selected product and project. Check coverage for glazing, electronics and installation, who handles service, and delivery assumptions before ordering.

What should I send to request a quote?

Start with location, application and main problem. Add approximate dimensions if you have them. Photos, drawings and electrical details can support the technical review afterward.

Your written proposal defines the selected SPD product, tint range, electrical equipment, installation scope and warranty. Review these details before placing an order.
